If you are looking for an easy, striped granny square pattern that doesn’t have huge gaps, or a million ends to weave in, then this pattern is for you.
The Maisie granny square alternates between 2 colours, but uses an easy colour changing technique to minimize the number of ends you need to weave in. Yay!
It’s a great project for using up scrap yarn, for beginners, or those looking for a relaxing make.
You can use it to make blankets, wall hangings, garments, bags, and more! Let’s get started.

Special Stitches:
Cluster (CL):
A cluster is made up of 2 hdc in the same space.

Space (Sp):
A space refers to the gap between each cluster. These gaps between the clusters do not have any ch-sps. The only ch-sps are the 4 corner ch-1 sps of the square.

Fasten on:
Insert hook into any corner ch-1 sp, YO with indicated colour, and pull through the sp.

Fasten off:
YO, and pull through the loop on the hook to make a long tail. Cut the strand, and pull it tight to close the knot that this creates.

Rnd 1:
- Ch 2, [CL, ch 1] 4 times in ch-circle.
- Sl st in the first hdc of the rnd to join.

- Then, move the loop and working yarn to the right, and make a CL in the same corner ch-1 sp to complete the corner. This “traps” Colour A in the ch-1 sp, so that we can access it for the next rnd.

Joining Multiple Crochet Granny Squares Together:
If you choose to make more than 1 striped granny square, then you’ll need to join them together. There are two ways to join these squares:
- Sew them together using the whip stitch or mattress stitch.
- Use one of the following join-as-you-go method to attach the granny squares as you make them. These methods do not require any sewing. Just remember to use half double crochets (not double crochets) when using these methods:
There is no right or wrong way to join granny squares. However, if you don’t trust your sewing skills, and you prefer to crochet, I recommend trying a join-as-you-go method. It’s a game changer!
The Maisie Blanket – Free Crochet Pattern:
The Maisie Blanket is inspired by this striped granny square pattern. Instead of fastening off after 7 rnds, we keep crocheting, to make this continuous granny square blanket.
If you’d like to try it, you can find the free pattern here!
