Crochet Textured Star Stitch Cowl and Infinity Scarf

How to Crochet a Star Stitch Cowl and Infinity Scarf

Hi guys! If you’re looking for something cozy, textured and relaxing to make, then I have the perfect project for you: The Written in the Stars Crochet Cowl and Infinity Scarf. This pattern is a spin-off of the Written in the Stars Potholder, which uses the half double crochet and modified star stitch to create a beautiful design.

Below, you’ll find written instructions and step-by-step pictures to help you make a cowl and/or infinity scarf! If you’d like to alter the size of either the cowl or the infinity scarf, then there are customization instructions under the heading, “How to Customize your Cowl and Infinity Scarf”.

Once you get the hang of the stitches, this becomes a relaxing project that you can crochet in just a few hours. On Boxing Day, I found a quiet corner in my home and crocheted the cowl in silence – it was the most relaxing hour I’ve had in a long time!

I hope you enjoy this fun stitch pattern.

You can use ANY medium 4 worsted weight yarn as a substitute.

Abbreviations:

  • Ch – chain
  • Sp – space
  • St – stitch
  • Sk – skip
  • Sl st – slip stitch
  • Sc – single crochet
  • Hdc – half double crochet
  • MStar st – modified star stitch
  • YO – yarn over
  • Rnd – round
  • RS – right side
  • WS – wrong side

Gauge: Approximately 14 sts x 3 repeats = 4” x 4.5”

14 stitches are equivalent to 14 sc, 14 hdc, or 7 modified star stitches.
A repeat refers to Rnds 2 – 5.

  • If your gauge is too small (more than 14 sts or 3 repeats), try using a thicker weight 4 yarn or a larger crochet hook.

  • If your gauge is too big (less than 14 sts or 3 repeats), try using a thinner weight 4 yarn or a smaller crochet hook. You can also try adjusting your tension.

Pattern Measurements & Construction:

  • The cowl measures approximately 25″ in circumference and 10.5″ in height (length).
  • The infinity scarf measures approximately 59″ in circumference (you can comfortably fold it twice) and 9″ in height (length).

Customize the Size of your Star Stitch Cowl or Infinity Scarf:

To make a custom sized scarf to suit you, follow the instructions below:

  • Width/Circumference: The width of the scarf/cowl is determined by the starting chain. Chain an even number until satisfied with the width of the scarf.

  • Length/Height: To make your scarf thicker or thinner, repeat Rnds 2 – 5 until satisfied. Both the infinity scarf and cowl should end with an adjustment to the last Rnd 5 repeat: instead of using half double crochets, use single crochets for a cleaner edge.

Third Loop Only:

  • Each crochet stitch has a front and back loop; these are the two loops that we normally work into when completing a stitch. However, the half double crochet stitch also has a “third” loop.

  • The third loop appears in front and below the front loop of the hdc.

  • In Rnd 5, we crochet into the third loop only to create a ribbed texture. You can tell that you’ve done this right, if you can see the front and back loop of each hdc on the right side of your scarf/cowl.

Right Side (RS) vs. Wrong Side (WS):

In the pattern, the RS of the cowl/infinity scarf is when the even rnds are facing you, and you can see the star stitch texture and ribbed edge of the hdc rows.

The WS of the cowl/infinity scarf is when the odd numbered rnds are facing you, and the stitches are flat and lack texture.

Video Tutorial:

The modified star stitch cowl and infinity scarf are VERY similar to the Written in the Stars Potholder. The only difference is Rnd 1. If you need extra support, here is a video tutorial for the Written in the Stars Crochet Potholder, which will help you with Rnds 2 – 5 of the pattern.

Pattern:

Notes:

  • This pattern uses the modified star stitch – MStar st (instead of having the normal 6 loops, we’ll only have 5 loops – see step-by-step tutorial for Rnd 2 below or the video tutorial above).
  • The beginning ch of each rnd does not count as a st.

  • Odd numbered rnds are considered the WS, and even numbered rnds are considered the RS.

  • The seam shifts slightly with each new rnd of modified star stitches. This is normal and will become the back side of our cowl/infinity scarf.

  • Different colours are used to highlight the stitch placement.

  • Always turn your work before starting a new rnd.

  • The pattern is written for two sizes: cowl (infinity scarf). When the pattern states to Ch 84 (200), you’ll chain 84 for the cowl and 200 for the infinity scarf.

Ch 84 (200). Join first ch to last ch with a sl st to make a chain circle. Make sure the chain isn’t twisted before making a sl st – see note above.

Rnd 1 (WS):

  • Ch 1, hdc in first ch – mark with a stitch marker
  • Hdc in each ch around. Mark the last hdc with a stitch marker.
  • Sl st into the first hdc of the rnd to join. Turn.

Stitch Count: 84 (200) hdc

Rnd 2 (RS):

First Modified Star Stitch:

  • Ch 3. Insert hook in second ch from hook, YO and draw up a loop – there should be 2 loops on hook.
  • Insert hook in next ch, YO and draw up a loop – there should be 3 loops on hook.
  • Insert hook in first marked st, YO and draw up a loop – there should be 4 loops on hook.
  • Insert hook in next st, YO and draw up a loop – there should be 5 loops on hook.
  • YO and pull through all 5 loops.
  • Ch 1. Mark ch-1 sp with a stitch marker.

Second Modified Star Stitch:

  • Insert hook in ch-1 sp of last st, YO and draw up a loop – 2 loops on hook.
  • Insert hook in the same st the last MStar used, YO and draw up a loop – 3 loops on hook.
  • [Insert hook in next st, YO and draw up a loop] 2 times5 loops on hook.
  • YO and pull through all 5 loops.
  • Ch 1.

Third Modified Star Stitch and On:

  • Repeat “Second Modified Star Stitch” around.
  • For the last MStar st, do not ch 1. Mark the last MStar st with a stitch marker.
  • Sl st into the first MStar st before the first ch-1 sp of the rnd to join. Turn.

Stitch Count: 42 (100) MStar st

Rnd 2 of the Written in the Stars Cowl and Infinity Scarf

Note:

For Rnd 3, if you have any trouble finding the ch-1 sp, turn your work, so you can find it from the other side.

Rnd 3 (WS):

  • Ch 1, 2 sc in last MStar of Rnd 2. Mark first sc with a stitch marker.
  • 2 sc in each ch-1 sp around. Mark last sc with a stitch marker.
  • Sl st into the first sc of the rnd to join. Turn.

Stitch Count: 84 (200) sc

Rnd 4 (RS):

  • Ch 1, hdc in first st. Mark first hdc with a stitch marker.
  • Hdc in each st around. Mark last hdc with a stitch marker.
  • Sl st into the first hdc of the rnd to join. Turn.

Stitch Count: 84 (200) hdc

Rnd 5 (WS):

  • Ch 1, hdc in third loop only of first st. Mark first hdc with a stitch marker.
  • Hdc in third loop only of each st around. Mark last hdc with a stitch marker.
  • Sl st into the first hdc of the rnd to join. Turn.

Stitch Count: 84 (200) hdc

Cowl:

Rnds 6 – 29: Repeat Rnds 2 – 5, 6 times.

For Rnd 29 (the final Rnd 5 repeat), instead of using half double crochets, use single crochets for a cleaner edge. Fasten off and weave in ends.
