How to Crochet Reusable Cotton Face Pads

About these Reusable Cotton Face Pads

These cotton face pads are incredibly easy to make; once you get the hang of it, you can make one in under 5 minutes – not including sewing in the ends because we all know that takes a bit more time.

Cotton face pads are great for washing your face or taking off make-up. They are made with Bernat Maker Home Dec yarn which is an 80% cotton and 20% nylon blend; so they are soft against your skin. Simply throw them into the wash with your towels or sheets, and they will be clean and ready to use again. These face pads also make great gifts for your friends and family (a few of my friends beg me for these), but they would also be great items to sell at craft markets.

Like any yarn, Bernat Maker Home Dec loses some of its color over time, but retains its shape and purpose. Each skein (ball) of yarn, makes approximately 20-25 face pads, depending on how tightly you crochet. Unfortunately, it is no longer sold in stores, but can be purchased online and shipped to your door from Joann’s, Yarnspirations, or Amazon. I will include links to the yarn from each retailer below. If this yarn is not available in your area, any cotton bulky weight 5 yarn will do the trick – t-shirt yarn would be a great substitution!

Alternative Yarn Options:

Bernat Home Decor Yarn is one of my favourite cotton yarns, but it’s nice to have options. Especially since this yarn is so popular that it is usually out of stock!

• Any t-shirt yarn will work well for this pattern. You can make your own, or find some on Etsy!

• You can also use any durable cotton medium 4 worsted weight yarn. You will need to crochet with two strands held together if you choose this option. Here is a list of yarn alternatives in the Worsted Weight Medium 4 Category to give you some options:

• Dishie Yarn: Dishie is an extremely durable 100% cotton yarn that holds up well over time, no matter how many times it’s washed. They have several options: Dishie Solids, Dishie Twist, Dishie Multi-Colored. With over 30 colours to choose from, I hope you find one that speaks to you. Out of all the cotton yarns, Dishie is the most budget-friendly and gives you the best bang for your buck!

• 24/7 Cotton Yarn: Lion Brand’s 24/7 Cotton Yarn is a mercerized cotton that is durable, has a nice sheen, and great stitch definition. It holds up well over time, but it does start to lose its color after a few washes. They have 24 colours to choose from, so there’s something for everyone!

• I Love this Cotton Yarn: This yarn can be found exclusively at Hobby Lobby and has 71 colours to choose from! It works great for garments, and home decor items.

Care Instructions for your Face Pads:

• Wash face pads with your towels/sheets in hot water
• Use the delicate cycle
• Lay flat and let them air dry

If you prefer to learn through a video, I don’t blame you. I learned how to crochet by watching hundreds of Youtube videos, before I started reading patterns. Here is a video tutorial that will teach you how to crochet these reusable cotton face pads from start to finish.

A Step-by-Step Photo Tutorial for Absolute Beginners:

*Crocheters who are familiar with reading patterns can find the written pattern by scrolling down to the “Written Pattern”.

Note: At the beginning of each round, you will make a chain. The beginning chain does not count as a stitch. Your completed face pad should measure approx. 4″ in diameter.

• Make a Magic Ring (A).

Round 1:

• Chain 2 and make 12 double crochet (dc) in the magic ring. (Pictures B, C, D)

• Join the last dc to the first dc with a slip stitch (Pictures E, F).

• You will have a total of 12 dc at the end of Round 1.

Round 2:

• Chain 2 and make 2 dc in each stitch around (Pictures G, H, I).

• Join the last dc to the first dc with a slip stitch (Pictures J, K).

• You will have 24 dc at the end of Round 2.

Round 3:

• Chain 1, make 1 single crochet (sc) in the first stitch, 2 sc in the next st, and repeat around, alternating between 1 sc and 2 sc in each stitch. (Pictures L, M, N)

• You will end with 2 sc in the last stitch.

• Join the last sc to the first sc with a slip stitch (Pictures O, P).

• At the end of Round 3, you will have a total of 36 sc stitches.

Fasten Off:

• Yarn over, and pull the yarn through the loop on your hook (Pictures Q, R, S).

• Tug on the loop you’ve created to create a long tail, and cut the yarn (Picture T, U).

• Grab your yarn needle, and weave/sew the yarn tails through your work (Picture V).

• Weaving in your ends prevents your face pad from unraveling. And you’re done!

Written Pattern:

Notes:

• The beg ch in each round does not count as a stitch.
• The completed face pad will have a diameter of approx. 4″.

Abbreviations:

• Ch – chain
• St – stitch
• MR – magic ring
• Sl st – slip st
• Sc – single crochet
• Dc – double crochet
• Rnd – round
• [] – Repeat the instructions inside these brackets.

Make a MR.

Rnd 1: Ch 2, 12 dc in MR; join with a sl st (12 dc).

Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around; join with a sl st (24 dc).

Rnd 3: Ch 1, [1 sc in first st, 2 sc in next st] around; join with a sl st (36 sc).

Tie off and weave in ends.
