Week 4 Pot Holders Galore CAL – Colorama Crochet Pot Holder

Hi guys! Welcome to Week 4 of the Pot Holders Galore Crochet-along. Today, we are making the Colorama Crochet Pot Holder, which uses my all-time favourite stitch: the moss stitch. You may know this as the linen, woven, or granite stitch, but the names are interchangeable. The moss stitch is a combination of single crochet and chain-1 spaces that takes a back seat and let’s the yarn shine. If you have a variegated yarn that you cannot find a use for, the moss stitch is the perfect solution. For our pot holder, we are working with two colours, but you can use as many or as few colours as you’d like.

Special Pattern Features:

What makes this pattern so great? Let’s count the ways!

• This pot holder is crocheted in the round, which makes it double thick to protect your hands, counters, and furniture from hot pots/pans.

• This is a great project for using up scrap yarn because you can go crazy with colour, and it will still look good!

• There are only 4 ends to weave in (two ends for each colour)! We are using a technique that allows us to drop a colour, and pick it back up when we need it, without having to fasten off at the end of round.

Materials: 

• 4.0mm crochet hook
• Scissors
• Yarn Needle
• Stitch Marker or Safety Pin
• Approximately 115 yds / 105 m of any medium 4 worsted weight cotton yarn per pot holder
  • Colour A: 60 yds / 55 m
  • Colour B: 55 yds / 50 m

Yarn: 

• 2 Skeins of Knit Picks Dishie Yarn, Weight 4 Medium Worsted Yarn (100% Cotton, 190 yd / 174 m, 3.5 oz/ 100 g)
  • Colour A: 60 yds / 55 m
  • Colour B: 55 yds / 50 m

  • Navy and Sunbaked
  • Swan and Sunbaked
  • Navy and Begonia

Abbreviations:

• Ch – chain
• St – stitch
• Sl st – slip stitch 
• Sc – single crochet
• Yo – yarn over
• Rnd – round

Gauge: Approximately 18 sts x 16 rows = 4” x  4”

• Note: 18 sts means 9 sc and 9 ch-1 sps.

Trouble with Gauge? 

If your gauge is too small, try using a thicker weight 4 yarn or a larger crochet hook. If your gauge is too big, try using a thinner weight 4 yarn or a smaller crochet hook. You can also try adjusting your tension.

Pattern Measurements:

• When the pot holder is folded, it measures approximately 7” wide x 7” long, and 9.25” along the diagonal.
• When the pot holder is lying flat, it measures approximately 10” wide by 5″ long.

Invisible Slip Stitch Colour Change Tutorial: 

• To create an “invisible” colour change at the end of each rnd, make a sl st by inserting the hook into the first st of the rnd with the current colour (green) – Picture 5. 

• Drop the current colour (green) and place it at the back of your work – Picture 5. 

• Yo with the new colour (pink) – Picture 5. 

• Pull the new colour through the st and the loop on the hook to complete the sl st – Picture 6. 

• You have completed the rnd, and changed colours!

Here is the complete video tutorial for the Colorama Crochet Pot Holder. It walks you through Rnds 1 – 3, fastening off, folding, seaming, and adding a ch-circle. There are timestamps included in the video, so you can skip around to the parts you need.

Pattern:

Notes: 

• Do not turn at the end of each rnd.
• The beginning ch of each rnd does NOT count as a st.
• Stitch counts are given at the end of each rnd in <> brackets. 
• To change colours between rnds, complete the final yo of the sl st join of each rnd with the new colour. 
• Yarn is not carried throughout this pattern. After joining the new colour, drop the old colour, and pick it up for the next rnd.
• If you decide to use one colour instead of two, please ignore the colour changes and complete each sl st join normally!

• There is a noticeable diagonal seam as we crochet, but don’t worry! Since this is a diagonal seam, and not a straight (up/down) seam, it will be hidden when we fold our pot holder because the seam falls along the edge of the pot holder.

*Tip: For Rnds 1 and 2, be gentle when working each sc, and give yourself slack / light tension on the working yarn to avoid tugging or pulling. Otherwise, the ch-sps stretch and you can see noticeable gaps between the starting ch and the rnd.

With Colour A, ch 42.

Rnd 1: Sc in second ch from hook, [ch 1, sk 1 ch, sc in next ch] across. (Sc, ch 1, sc, ch 1) in last ch – this is a corner.   

• Rotate your work 180 degrees clockwise, so you are working along the bottom of the chain. 

• [sk 1 ch, sc in next ch, ch 1] across. The last (sc, ch 1) should be in the first ch of the rnd to complete the corner. Sl st in the first sc of the rnd, and complete the final yo with Colour B to make an invisible colour change (see tutorial “Invisible Colour Change” above). <42 sc, 42 ch-1 sp>

Rnd 2: With Colour B, ch 1, (sc, ch 1) in first ch-1 sp, [sk 1 st, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] around. Sl st in the first sc of the rnd, and complete the final yo with Colour A to make an invisible colour change. <42 sc, 42 ch-1 sp>

Rnd 3: With Colour A, ch 1, (sc, ch 1) in first ch-1 sp, [sk 1 st, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] around. Sl st in the first sc of the rnd, and complete the final yo with Colour B to make an invisible colour change. <42 sc, 42 ch-1 sp>

There is a noticeable seam, but this will be hidden along the side of our pot holder when we fold it. So you won’t be able to see it!

Rnds 4 – 19: Repeat Rnds 2 – 3, 8 times. As the pot holder grows, it starts to look like a pouch. 

Try folding your pot holder to see if it fits together as a “square”. If it does, fasten off at the end of Rnd 19. If it doesn’t,  proceed to Rnd 20, or repeat Rnds 2 – 3 until it fits together.

Rnd 20: Repeat Rnd 2.

Make a sl st into the first st of Rnd 20 with current colour. Fasten off, and leave a long tail (approx. 12”) to seam the pot holder together. Weave in the ends, except for the long seaming tail.

Folding, Seaming, and Adding a Ch-Circle

The Colorama Crochet Pot Holder is folded and seamed the same way as Week 1’s Fairy Dust Pot Holder, with a slight difference! After folding the pot holder, the seaming tail will be at one end of the pot holder (instead of in the center), so we will whip stitch straight across.

Folding Instructions: 

Place one hand on each side of the pot holder. Push the sides down into the center to make a square that meets on a diagonal. 

Seaming Instructions:

Note: After folding the pot holder, the seaming tail will be at one end of the pot holder (instead of in the center like previous pot holders), so we will whip stitch straight across. 

• Line up the two sides along the diagonal, and whip stitch in the front loop only of each st across. This seams the entire pot holder closed (Pictures 1, 2, 3).

• *Tip: To create a less noticeable seam, pull tight after working each whip stitch. Picture 3 has very loose whip stitches which is used to highlight the stitch placement.

• After completing the final whip stitch, insert the needle into the corner and pull it through a few stitches (Picture 4, 5). This creates a rounded corner, and allows you to weave the tail through a few stitches, before securing it with a knot and trimming it. 

Last Step: Adding a Chain Circle to Hang the Pot Holder

• Make sure that the front side of the pot holder is facing you. 
• Insert hook into the top-left corner, and attach yarn with a sl st. (Picture 1 & 2)
• Ch 13, and sl st into same sp to make a ch circle. (Picture 3, 4, & 5)
• Fasten off and weave in ends!
