How to Crochet the Bake Me a Pie Potholder (PGCAL2022)

Hi guys! Welcome to Week 2 of the Pot Holders Galore Crochet-along. We are making the Bake Me a Pie Crochet Pot Holder. This pot holder is my favourite of the bunch, so I really hope you enjoy it. The pattern uses the single crochet and the spike stitch to create a beautiful, double thick texture. The Story Behind the Pattern Name:

For the past few weeks, I have been dreaming of blueberry pie. There is an advertisement that plays on the radio for a farm called “Parks Blueberries and Country Stores”. Every time I hear it, I envision a freshly baked pie, sitting on the windowsill of a farm house, on top of some white and red gingham picnic fabric. Since this pot holder is my favourite, and it gives off a farmhouse vibe, I named it “Bake Me a Pie”. So in case you wondering, that’s the story behind the name haha!

Materials: 

• 4.0mm crochet hook
• Scissors
• Yarn Needle
• Stitch Marker or Safety Pin
• Approximately 112 yds / 102 m of any medium 4 worsted weight cotton yarn per pot holder

Yarn: 

• 1 Skein of Knit Picks Dishie Yarn, Weight 4 Medium Worsted Yarn (100% Cotton, 190 yd / 174 m, 3.5 oz/ 100 g)

• Colours Pictured Below (Left to Right): Swan, Linen, Blue, and Goldfish (Dishie Multi)

Abbreviations: 

• Ch – chain
• St – stitch
• Sl st – slip stitch 
• Sc – single crochet
• Spike – extended single crochet one row below (see tutorial below)
• Rnd – round

Gauge:

• Approximately 13 sts = 4” wide
• Approximately 17 rows = 4” long. 

Pattern Measurements:

• When the pot holder is folded, it measures approximately 6.5” wide x 6.5” long, and 8.5” along the diagonal.
• When the pot holder is lying flat, it measures approximately 9” wide by 4.5” long.
• Note: Due to the overlapping stitches, the pot holder will expand after a few Rnds, so it will be wider than Rnd 1.

The Single Crochet Spike Stitch Photo Tutorial

Each single crochet spike stitch is worked into the st one row below. 

• Insert the hook into the indicated st one row below.

• YO, and pull up the loop until it reaches the height of the current row. 

• YO and pull through both 2 loops to complete the st!

Here is the video tutorial for the Bake Me a Pie Crochet Pot Holder. It walks you through Rnds 1 – 4, and fastening off.

• *Note: The Bake Me a Pie Crochet Pot Holder is completed the same way as Week 1’s Fairy Dust Pot Holder, so please reference the video tutorial here for weaving in ends, folding, seaming, and adding a ch-circle. There are timestamps in the video, so you can skip to the part(s) you need.

Pattern:

Notes: 

• Do not turn at the end of each rnd. 
• This pattern is worked in a continuous rnd, which means that the rnds do not end with a sl st. Instead, mark the first st of each rnd with a stitch marker (or safety pin) to know where each rnd starts.
• Stitch counts are given at the end of each rnd in <> brackets. 
• There is a photo tutorial for the Spike st above.
• Due to the overlapping stitches, the pot holder will expand after a few Rnds, so it will be wider than Rnd 1.

Ch 30

Rnd 1: 2 sc in second ch from hook, sc in each ch across; 3 sc in last ch (this is a corner). 

• Rotate your work 180 degrees clockwise, so you are working along the bottom of the chain. 
• Sc in each ch across. The last sc should be in the first ch of the rnd to complete the corner. Do not join with a sl st. Instead, proceed to Rnd 2. <60 sc>

*Note: For Rnd 2, each Spike is worked into the starting ch. 

Rnd 2: Sc in first st (mark with a stitch marker), [Spike in next ch, sc in next st] around. Rnd 2 should end with a Spike into the last ch.Do not join with a sl st. <30 sc + 30 Spike>

Tip: If you’ve done this rnd correctly, the spike stitches should line up with each other (Picture 4).

*Note: After Rnd 2, each sc is worked into a Spike st, and each Spike st is worked into a sc. This creates an overlapping effect.

Rnd 3: Spike in first st (mark with a stitch marker), [sc in next st, Spike in next st] around. Rnd 3 should end with a sc into the last st. Do not join with a sl st. <30 sc + 30 Spike>

Rnd 4: Sc in first st (mark with a stitch marker), [Spike in next st, sc in next st] around. Rnd 4 should end with a Spike into the last st. Do not join with a sl st. <30 sc + 30 Spike>

Rnds 5 – 20: Repeat Rnds 3 – 4, 8 times. As the pot holder grows, it starts to look like a pouch.

Make a sl st into both loops of the first st of Rnd 20. Fasten off, and leave a long tail (approx. 12”) to seam the pot holder together. Weave in the ends, except for the long seaming tail. 

Folding, Seaming, and Adding a Ch-Circle

The Bake Me a Pie Crochet Pot Holder is folded and seamed the same way as Week 1’s Fairy Dust Pot Holder, so please reference the photo tutorials and instructions included below. 

Folding Instructions: 

Place one hand on each side of the pot holder. Push the sides down into the center to make a square that meets on a diagonal. 

Seaming Instructions:

Note: Since the seaming tail is in the center of the diagonal, seam the left side of the pot holder first, then seam the right side. 

• Line up the two sides along the diagonal, and whip stitch in the FLO of each st across. This seams the left side of the pot holder. (Pictures 1, 2, 3)
• *Tip: To create a less noticeable seam, pull tight after working each whip stitch. Picture 3 has very loose whip stitches which is used to highlight the stitch placement.
• When the left side is seamed, insert the yarn needle into the corner of the pot holder. (Picture 4 & 5)

• Grab the yarn needle with your hand and pull it through the inside of the potholder. This creates a rounded corner on the left side of the pot holder, and allows you to use the same tail to seam the right side of the pot holder. (Picture 6)
• To seam the right side, whip stitch in FLO of each st across. (Picture 7)
• When the right side is seamed, insert the yarn needle into the corner, and weave it through a few stitches to create a rounded corner. (Picture 8)
• Secure the tail with a knot, before trimming it.  

Last Step: Adding a Chain Circle to Hang the Pot Holder

• Make sure that the front side of the pot holder is facing you. 
• Insert hook into the top-left corner, and attach yarn with a sl st. (Picture 1 & 2)
• Ch 13, and sl st into same sp to make a ch circle. (Picture 3, 4, & 5)
• Fasten off and weave in ends!
