Hi guys! I am hosting a Pot Holders Galore Crochet-along, which features 6 different pot holder designs. These pot holders range in size from 6″ – 7.5″ in length and width. If you would like to crochet a custom sized pot holder, this post is for you. Customization instructions will be given for each specific pot holder pattern. I hope this helps you make a size that suits you!
*Important Note: To crochet a custom pot holder, there is a little math involved, but we will be using an online calculator to make things easier. If you have any questions along the way, please reach out to me at thispixiecreates@gmail.com; I am happy to help.
Step 1: Choose the Size of Your Pot Holder:
- The size of the pot holder is determined by the diagonal (c) – diagram shown below.
- Choose your desired width (a), and length (b), then input (a) and (b) into this online calculator to determine the value of (c). The online calculator does the work for you!
- Ex.: I chose a square of 7” wide x 7” long.
- C =9.9
- This means that C = 9.9”, so the diagonal should measure approximately 9.9”.
- Proceed to your specific pot holder instructions below.

Fairy Dust – Pot Holder #1:
- Chain any number until the starting ch measures approximately C + 0.75”.
- The extra 0.75” is added because the chain shrinks after Rnd 1.
- Ex. For a 7” x 7” pot holder, C = 9.9” + 0.75” = 10.65”. So chain until the starting chain measures 10.65” long.
- Follow the pattern instructions, and repeat Rnds 2 – 3, until the pot holder fits together on the back side. Seam it together, and the pot holder is complete!
Bake Me a Pie – Pot Holder #2:
- Chain any number until the starting ch measures approximately C – 2″.
- This is done because the overlapping stitches cause the pot holder to expand in size after a few rnds, so Rnd 1 will be less wide than the rest of the pot holder.
- Ex. For a 7” x 7” pot holder, C = 9.9” – 2” = 7.9”. So chain until the starting chain measures 7.9” long.
- Follow the pattern instructions, and repeat Rnds 3 – 4, until the pot holder fits together on the back side. Seam it together, and the pot holder is complete!
Ripple Effect – Pot Holder #3:
- Chain any number until the starting ch measures approximately C – 0.75”.
- Ex. For a 7” x 7” pot holder, C = 9.9” – 0.75” = 9.15”. So chain until the starting chain measures 9.15” long.
- Follow the pattern instructions, and repeat Rnds 2 – 4, until the pot holder fits together on the back side. Seam it together, and the pot holder is complete!
Colorama – Pot Holder #4:
- Chain any number until the starting ch measures approximately C + 0.75”.
- The extra 0.75” is added because the chain shrinks after Rnd 1.
- Ex. For a 7” x 7” pot holder, C = 9.9” + 0.75” = 10.65”. So chain until the starting chain measures 10.65” long.
- Follow the pattern instructions, and repeat Rnds 2 – 4, until the pot holder fits together on the back side. Seam it together, and the pot holder is complete!
Simply Daisy – Pot Holder #5:
- Chain a multiple of 2 + 5 (ex. 2 x 20 = 40 + 5 = 45) until the starting ch measures approx. C + 0.75”.
- Ex. For a 7” x 7” pot holder, C = 9.9” + 0.75” = 10.65”. So chain until the starting chain measures 10.65” long.
- Follow the pattern instructions, and repeat Rnds 3 – 4, until the pot holder fits together on the back side. Seam it together, and the pot holder is complete!
Afternoon Tea – Pot Holder #6:
- Chain any number until the starting ch measures approximately C – 2”.
- This is done because the overlapping stitches cause the pot holder to expand in size after a few rnds, so Rnds 1 – 2 will be less wide than the rest of the pot holder.
- Ex. For a 7” x 7” pot holder, C = 9.9” – 2” = 7.9”. So chain until the starting chain measures 7.9” long.
- Follow the pattern instructions, and repeat Rnds 3 – 6, until the pot holder fits together on the back side. Seam it together, and the pot holder is complete!
