How to Crochet the For the Love of Texture Afghan Pattern in UK Terms

Abbreviations:

  • Ch – chain
  • St(s) – stitch(es)
  • Sk – skip
  • RS – right side
  • WS – wrong side
  • Dc – double crochet
  • Htr – half treble crochet
  • PS – puff stitch (see tutorial below)
  • Yoh – yarn over hook
  • [ ] – repeat instructions inside brackets

Tension Swatch (4” x 4”):

The final swatch should measure 4” x 4” unblocked. The beginning ch 2 does not count as a stitch.

  • Ch 13
  • Row 1: Htr in second ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. <12 htr>
  • Rows 2 – 3: Ch 1, htr in first st, [sk 1 st, htr in next st, htr in skipped st] until 1 st remains, htr in last st. Turn. <2 htr, 5 crossed htr pairs>

Trouble with Tension?

If your tension swatch is too small, try using a thicker weight 4 yarn or a larger crochet hook. If your tension swatch is too big, try using a thinner weight 4 yarn or a smaller crochet hook.

Pattern Measurements:

The For the Love of Texture Afghan measures approximately 115 cm x 135 cm. If you’d like to make a different sized blanket, follow the “Customize the Size of your Blanket” instructions below.

  • Width: 115 cm
  • Length: 135cm

Customizing the Size of Your Blanket

Width: The width of your blanket is determined by your starting chain. The original pattern calls for chaining 137, but if you’d like to customize the width of your blanket (i.e. make it shorter/longer), your chain must be a multiple of 10 + 7.

Length: To make your blanket shorter/longer than the original pattern, continue to repeat Rows 7 – 18, until you are satisfied with the length of your blanket. Then finish the blanket with Rows 115 – 123.

Special Stitches:

Puff Stitch (PS):

  • Step 1: Yoh, and insert hook into the indicated st.
  • Step 2: Yoh and draw up a loop – there should be 3 loops on the hook.
  • Step 3: Repeat Steps 1 – 2, three more times in the same stitch – there should be 9 loops on the hook.
  • Step 4: Yoh and pull through the first 8 loops on the hook – there should be 2 loops remaining on the hook.
  • Step 5: Yoh and pull through the last 2 loops to close the st.

Crossed Half Treble Crochet (Crossed Htr):

  • The crossed htr st looks like an “X” because one htr is worked over the other.
  • Step 1: Skip the first st and make a htr in the next st.
  • Step 2: Make a htr in the skipped st from behind.
  • If you’d like more of a visual, here is a video tutorial for this stitch.

Changing Colour Tutorial:

The For the Love of Texture Afghan changes colour at the end of each panel, and throughout Row 8. Colour changes always happen in the final Yoh of the last stitch before a colour change.

  • Step 1: Before you complete the final Yoh of the last stitch before a colour change (ex. when there are two loops remaining on the hook), drop the current colour (white).
  • Step 2: Pick up the new colour (green) and pull it through the remaining loops on your hook. You made the final Yoh to complete the stitch and change colour.

The following videos use US crochet terminology, so please keep that in mind as you watch. Here are the stitch translations:

Single crochet (US) = Dc (UK)

Half double crochet (US) = Htr (UK)

Notes:

  • A colour chart is provided below to show when to change colour throughout the blanket.
  • The beginning chain of each row does NOT count as a stitch.
  • The crossed half treble crochets in Rows 4 – 5 are worked differently than what you might be used to. Please watch the video here, before starting these rows!
  • In Row 8, you will be working with two colours. All of the dc sts are worked with Colour D and all of the PS sts are worked in the panel colour (Colour A, B, or C). There is a tutorial for changing colour above.
  • When crocheting row 8, make sure to carry the yarn through the row to create seamless colour changes. There is a video tutorial for Row 8 here.
  • Odd numbered rows are considered the RS, while even numbered rows are considered the WS.

  • Stitch counts are given at the end of each row in ().

  • Tip: Mark the first and last stitch of each row with a stitch marker (or safety pin). This helps you maintain your stitch count!
