Hi guys! I wasn’t going to post a tutorial for this puff stitch crochet ear warmer until the fall, but who says we can’t make winter accessories in the summer? No matter how high the temperature rises, I am never afraid to work on blankets, sweaters, or winter makes.
If you feel the same way, then this crochet ear warmer pattern is the perfect project for you. The Cloud 9 Ear Warmer is designed for comfort and warmth, and feels like a cloud wrapped around your head.
Depending on how quickly you crochet, this ear warmer can be completed in 30 minutes to an hour and half, making it the perfect item for craft markets or last minute holiday gifts. One ear warmer uses less than 1 skein of yarn, so it’s also a great stash buster project.

About this Puff Stitch Crochet Ear Warmer:
- This ear warmer will fit a teen/adult with a head circumference of 21″ – 23″.
- The pattern calls for 86 yards of any medium 4 worsted weight yarn.

The Cloud 9 Infinity Scarf was designed to match the Cloud 9 Ear Warmer! It uses the puff stitch to create a warm, yet light-weight, infinity scarf that you can make in a few short hours, while watching TV.
Materials:
- Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek Weight 4 Medium (100% Acrylic, 232 yd/ 212 m, 5 oz/ 142 g) 1 Skein of French Lilac – approx. 86 yds used in project
- 5.5 mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Yarn Needle

Abbreviations:
- Ch – chain
- Sk – skip
- Sp – space
- St – stitch
- Ps- Puff Stitch
- YO – yarn over
- Rs – right side
- Ws – wrong side
Gauge: Approximately 7 Ps x 7 rows in 4″ x 4″
Trouble with Gauge?
Throughout the pattern, you can check your measurements as you crochet. If your gauge is too small, try using a thicker weight 4 yarn or a larger crochet hook. If your gauge is too big, try using a thinner weight 4 yarn or a smaller crochet hook. You can also remove or add rows to the beginning and end of the headband (don’t add or remove any rows in the twist section of the pattern).
Pattern Measurements:
Before the headband is seamed together, and is laid flat, it measures 4.75″ x 19″.
- Width: 4.75″
- Length: 19 – 20″
Puff Stitch Tutorial:
I’ve included a photo tutorial below, to guide you through the steps of making a puff stitch. However, if you prefer to learn through video, here is a link to an excellent tutorial by ExpressionsFiberArts.
Step 1: Yarn over, and insert hook into the st or sp.
Step 2: Yarn over and draw up a loop – there should be 3 loops on the hook.
Step 3: Repeat Step 2, two more times – there should be 7 loops on the hook.
Step 4: Yarn over, and pull through the first 6 loops on the hook – there should be 2 loops remaining on the hook.
Step 5: Yarn over, and pull through the last 2 loops to close the st.

Notes:
- After Row 1, each Ps is worked into the ch-1 sp of the previous row.
- The last Ps of each row is worked into the sp between the Ps and the ch 3 of the previous row (Picture 3).
- Odd numbered rows are considered the Rs, and even numbered rows are considered the Ws.
Ch 18
Row 1 (Rs): Ps in 4th ch from hook (this counts as a ch 3 and Ps), [ch 1, sk 1 ch, Ps in next ch] 7 times. Turn. <8 Ps>
Row 2 (Ws): Ch 3, Ps in first ch-1 sp, [ch 1, Ps in next ch-1 sp] 7 times. Turn. <8 Ps>
Rows 3 – 11: Repeat Row 2. The headband should measure approximately 7 – 7.25″.
First Half of Twist:
Row 12: Ch 3, Ps in first ch-1 sp, [ch 1, Ps in next ch-1 sp] 3 times. Leave the last 4 ch-1 sps unworked. Turn. <4 Ps>
Row 13: Ch 3, Ps in first ch-1 sp, [ch 1, Ps in next ch-1 sp] 3 times. Turn. <4 Ps>
Rows 14 – 19: Repeat Row 13. Fasten off at the end of Row 19. Your work should measure approximately 11 – 12″.
Second Half of Twist:
Row 12: Make sure that the WS is facing you. Starting in the fifth ch-1 sp of Row 11, ch 3 and Ps; [ch 1, Ps in next ch-1 sp] 3 times. Turn. <4 Ps>
Row 13: Ch 3, Ps in first ch-1 sp, [ch 1, Ps in next ch-1 sp] 3 times. Turn. <4 Ps>
Rows 14 – 19: Repeat Row 13 (do not fasten off).
Connecting the 1st and 2nd Half Twists:
Pull the first half of the twist over the second half of the twist to create an “X”. Turn your work.
Row 20: You will be working across the two twists to connect them together. Ch 3, Ps in first ch-1 sp, [ch 1, Ps in next ch-1 sp] 7 times. Turn. <8 Ps>
Rows 21 – 30: Repeat Row 20.
Fasten off. Leave a long tail (approx. 10”) to sew the ends of the headband together. Weave in all ends, except the long tail.
Seaming the Crochet Ear Warmer Together:
To sew the headband together, we will be using a technique called the whip stitch. If you are unfamiliar with this stitch, there is a great tutorial by Wool and the Gang to help you here.
Line up the edges of the headband, making sure that it is not twisted.
Thread the long tail through your yarn needle, and begin whip stitching along the edges of the headband to join them. You should have a total of 15 whip stitches (8 Ps and 7 ch-1 sps). And you’re done!
