20 of the Best Double Thick Crochet Potholder Patterns

Hi guys! If you love crocheting potholders and have worked through the 31 potholder patterns on my blog, then this round-up is for you. Below, you’ll find 20 beautiful, unique, and FREE potholder patterns from different crochet designers.

I hope you find a potholder that speaks to you and discover some new designers along the way!

What Can I Use a Potholder For?

Potholders (a.k.a hot pads and trivets) are not just for decoration. They are practical items that you can use in the kitchen.

  • Set a scolding pot/pan/baking sheet/casserole dish on a potholder to protect your counters and furniture.

  • Use them like oven mitts when taking something out of the oven or microwave.

  • Use them as a portable placemat. Place a potholder underneath a hot bowl or plate, so you can carry your food to the table or the couch.

  • Use them as a coaster for hot drinks!

How Do I Make a Potholder Thick Enough?

Most of the patterns below are double thick, which means they have two layers/sides. However, if you come across a pattern that only has one layer, then you can make it double thick by crocheting an identical layer, and crocheting or sewing the two pieces together.

What Yarn is Best for Making Potholders?

Since potholders are going to be exposed to a lot of heat, using 100% cotton yarn is the safest material to use. 100% Wool is also a great alternative because it is heat resistant.

However, acrylic and other fibers melt under excessive heat. So when a hot pan is placed on them, the heat will cause the potholder to melt, the stitches to clump together, and chemicals to be released into the air.
