Easy Textured Suzette Stitch Crochet Potholder Pattern

How to Crochet the Suzette Stitch Potholder (PGCAL2024)

Hi guys! Can you believe that we are starting our fifth potholder in the 2024 Potholders Galore Crochet-Along? Introducing the Suzi Potholder, named after the Suzette Stitch that is used to create it.

The Suzette Stitch, also known as the blanket stitch, uses a combination of the single crochet and double crochet to create a beautiful texture. The beauty of this stitch is that it looks more complicated than it is.

You can find the free written pattern with step-by-step pictures below, along with a complete video tutorial for extra support.

If you prefer to print the pattern and avoid ads, you can find the printable PDF here.

Front, Back and Seam of the Potholder:

This potholder has an invisible seam along the side of the potholder, so the front and back side of the potholder can be used!

Abbreviations:

  • Ch – chain
  • St – stitch
  • Sl st – slip stitch
  • Sk – skip
  • Sc – single crochet
  • Dc – double crochet
  • Rnd – round

Gauge: Approximately 15 sts x 12 rows = 4” x 4”

Stitches include sc and dc sts.

  • If your gauge is too small (more than 15 sts or 12 rows), try using a thicker weight 4 yarn or a larger crochet hook.

  • If your gauge is too big (less than 15 sts or 12 rows), try using a thinner weight 4 yarn or a smaller crochet hook. You can also try adjusting your tension.

Pattern Measurements & Construction:

This suzette stitch crochet potholder is crocheted in the round to make a little pouch, then seamed closed at the top. This method creates a “double-thick” potholder with an invisible side seam. It measures approximately 8″ wide x 8″ long.

If you’d like to crochet a smaller or larger version of this potholder, you can find instructions below under the “Customize the Size of your Potholder” heading.

Customize the Size of your Suzette Stitch Crochet Potholder:

To make a custom sized potholder to suit you, follow the instructions below:

  • Width: The width of the potholder is determined by the starting chain. Chain an even number until satisfied with the width of the potholder.
  • Length: To make your potholder longer or shorter, repeat Rnd 2 until satisfied.

The Ad-free Printable PDF for the Suzette Stitch Crochet Potholder is available as an individual PDF pattern on Ravelry or Etsy; or as a Crochet Along bundle, which includes written instructions for all 13 patterns on Ravelry or Etsy!

Easy Blanket Stitch and Suzette Stitch Crochet Potholder Pattern for Beginners

Video Tutorial:

Here is the video tutorial for the Suzette Stitch Crochet Potholder. It walks you through Rnds 1 – 4, crocheting the potholder closed, and adding a ch-circle.

Pattern:

Notes:

  • Turn your work at the end of each rnd, so that the seam stays straight on the side of the potholder.
    • If you find it difficult to turn, that’s okay. You don’t have to turn. Just be aware that by not turning, you will have a noticeable diagonal seam on the back of your potholder (turning avoids this). If you choose not to turn, please mark the first sc of the round, so you know where to make a slip stitch into at the end of the rnd.

  • The beginning ch 1 of each rnd does not count as a st.

  • Mark the first and last sc of each new rnd with a stitch marker, so you know where the new rnd starts and ends.

With Colour A, ch 30 (or ch an even number).

Rnd 1:

  • (Sc, dc) in second ch from hook – mark sc with a stitch marker.
  • [Sk 1 ch, (sc, dc) in next ch] until 1 ch remains
  • (Sc, dc, sc, dc) in last ch.
  • Rotate your work 180 degrees clockwise, so you are working along the bottom of the chain.
  • [sk 1 ch, (sc, dc) in next ch] across. Mark the last sc with a stitch marker.
  • Sl st into the first sc of the rnd to join. Turn.

Stitch Count:30 sc, 30 dc

Rnd 2:

  • Ch 1, sk dc, (sc, dc) in first sc – mark sc with a stitch marker
  • [sk dc, (sc, dc) in next sc] around. Mark the last sc with a stitch marker.
  • Sl st in first sc of the rnd to join. Turn.

Stitch Count: 30 sc, 30 dc

Round 2 of the Suzette Stitch Crochet Potholder

Rnds 3 – 23: Repeat Rnd 2.

Do not fasten off, as you will need this yarn for closing the top of the potholder. Weave in all ends (except for the current yarn strand).

Crocheting the Potholder Closed:

  • Lay the potholder flat, and line up the front and back sts.

  • With Colour A, starting in the top right corner, ch 1, insert the hook into both loops of the front dc and matching back sc, and make a sl st.

  • Sl st into each st across, making sure to insert the hook into the matching front and back st to join.

  • Do not fasten off.

  • Stitch Count: 30 sl st

Adding a Ch-Circle:

  • After making the final sl st, ch 13 (Picture 1)

  • Sl st into the side of the first ch to make a ch-circle. (Picture 2, 3)

  • Fasten off, leave a tail, and weave in the last end (Picture 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).
