Hi guys! We’re starting our 6th potholder in the 2024 Potholders Galore Crochet-Along. Introducing the Stroll in the Park Potholder, which uses a combination of the half double crochet and double crochet stitch to create a beautiful, ribbed texture.

There are two potholder sizes to choose from. Below you’ll find the amount of yarn needed to make each size.

Front, Back and Seam of the Potholder:
How Does this Potholder Look in a Solid Colour vs. Variegated?
Whether you make this potholder in a single colour, multiple colours, or in a variegated yarn, the result is beautiful. Below is an example of the potholder done in a solid colour and in a multi-colour self-striping yarn.
Abbreviations:
Gauge: Approximately 17 sts x 9 rows = 4” x 4”
- If your gauge is too small (more than 17 sts or 9 rows), try using a thicker weight 4 yarn or a larger crochet hook.
- If your gauge is too big (less than 17 sts or 9 rows), try using a thinner weight 4 yarn or a smaller crochet hook. You can also try adjusting your tension.
Pattern Measurements & Construction:
There are two potholder sizes to choose from:
- Size #1: 7″ x 7″
- Size #2: 8″ x 8″
Customize the Size of your Ribbed Crochet Potholder:
- Width: The width of the potholder is determined by the starting chain. Chain any number until satisfied with the width of the potholder.
- Length: To make your potholder longer or shorter, repeat Rnds 2 – 3 until satisfied.

Third Loop Only:
- Each crochet stitch has a front and back loop; these are the two loops that we normally work into when completing a stitch. However, the half double crochet stitch also has a “third” loop.
- The third loop appears in front and below the front loop of the hdc.
- In Rnds 3, 5, 7..etc., we crochet into the third loop only to create a ribbed texture. You can tell that you’ve done this right, if you can see the front and back loop of each hdc on the right side of your potholder.
Right Side (RS) vs. Wrong Side (WS):
In the pattern, the RS of the potholder is when the even rnds are facing towards you, and you can see the ribbed edge of the hdc rows. The WS of the potholder is when the odd numbered rnds are facing you, and the stitches are flat and lack texture.

Pattern:
- Turn your work at the end of each rnd, so the seam stays straight on the side of the potholder.
- The beginning ch of each rnd does not count as a st.
- Mark the first and last st of each new rnd with a stitch marker, so you know where the rnd starts and ends.
- Odd numbered rnds are considered the WS, and even numbered rnds are considered the RS (see explanation above).
- The pattern is written with instructions for the 2 sizes: 7″ x 7″ and 8″ x 8″. Ex. Ch 31 (35), means ch 31 for Size #1, and ch 35 for Size #2.
With Colour A, ch 31 (35).
Rnd 1 (WS):
- Dc in third ch from hook – mark with a stitch marker.
- Dc in each ch across until 1 ch remains.
- 3 dc in the last ch.
- Rotate your work 180 degrees clockwise, so you are working along the bottom of the chain.
- Sk last ch with 3 dc. Dc in next ch and in each ch across until 1 ch remains.
- 2 dc in last ch. Mark the last dc with a stitch marker.
- Sl st into the first st of the rnd to join. Turn.
Stitch Count: 60 (68) dc
Rnd 2 (RS):
- Ch 1, hdc in first st – mark hdc with a stitch marker.
- Hdc in each st around. Mark the last hdc with a stitch marker.
- Sl st into the first st of the rnd to join. Turn.
Stitch Count: 60 (68) hdc
Rnd 3 (WS):
- Ch 2, dc in third loop only of first st – mark dc with a stitch marker.
- Dc in third loop only of each st around. Mark the last dc with a stitch marker.
- Sl st into the first st of the rnd to join. Turn.
Stitch Count: 60 (68) dc
Size #1:
Rnds 4 – 15: Repeat Rnds 2 – 3. Rnd 15 is a Rnd 3 repeat.
Size #2:
Rnds 4 – 17: Repeat Rnds 2 – 3. Rnd 17 is a Rnd 3 repeat.
Do not fasten off, as you will need this yarn for closing the top of the potholder. Weave in all ends (except for the current yarn strand).
Crocheting the Potholder Closed:
- Lay the potholder flat, making sure the RS is facing you (if it isn’t, flip your work inside out), and line up the front and back stitches.
- Ch 1, insert hook into first st on the front, and the matching st on the back of the potholder, and make a hdc.
- Hdc in each st across, inserting the hook into the matching front and back st to join. Do not fasten off.
- Stitch Count: 30 (34) sl st
Adding a Ch-Circle:
- After making the final hdc, ch 13 (Picture 1).
- Insert hook into front loop and two front bars of last hdc (going on a diagonal). Make a sl st to close the ch-circle. (Picture 2 & 3)
- Fasten off, leave a tail, and weave in the last end (Picture 4, 5, 6, 7).
