Choosing your Colours:
The original pattern uses 4 colours, but you can use any number of colours (2, 3, 5, 6, etc.). This stitch really pops with more than 1 colour, so choose 2 or more colours for the best results.
If you’re worried about using more than one colour because of the extra ends, don’t be. Each colour is carried throughout the potholder, so you’ll only have 2 ends to weave in for every colour used.
Abbreviations:
Gauge: Approximately 15 sts x 12 rows = 4” x 4”
Stitches include hdc, hdc-spike, and ch-1 sps.
- If your gauge is too small (more than 15 sts or 12 rows), try using a thicker weight 4 yarn or a larger crochet hook.
- If your gauge is too big (less than 15 sts or 12 rows), try using a thinner weight 4 yarn or a smaller crochet hook. You can also try adjusting your tension.
Pattern Measurements & Construction:
Customize the Size of your Granny Spike Stitch Potholder:
- Width: The width of the potholder is determined by the starting chain. Chain a multiple of 4 + (1). Ex. Multiple of 4: 36 (+ 1) = 37.
- Length: To make your potholder longer or shorter, repeat Rnds 3 – 4, while following the colour changes, until satisfied.

Colour Change Tutorial:
Colour changes happen at the end of every second rnd in the sl st join. Always leave your unused colour strand attached to your potholder because you’ll need it for future rnds, and it’ll save you from weaving in extra ends.
- After crocheting the last st of the rnd, insert hook into the first st of the rnd to join. Drop the current colour (gold). (Picture 1).
- YO with the new colour (blue), and pull through the st and loop on the hook to complete the sl st and change colour (Picture 2 & 3).
- Make sure the unused colour (gold) is hanging from the back of your work, so you can pick it up when you need it.
Half Double Crochet Spike (Hdc-spike):
A half double crochet spike is an extended half double crochet.
- YO and insert hook into the indicated st 2 rnds below (Picture 1).
- YO and draw up a loop. Pull up on the loop to bring it up to the height of the other stitches in the current rnd. There should be 3 loops on the hook (Picture 2 & 3).
- YO and pull through all 3 loops (Picture 4).
Single Crochet 2 Stitches Together (Sc2tog):
A sc2tog is crocheted across two stitches to make one single crochet stitch – this is called a decrease because we turn 2 stitches into 1.
- Insert hook into first indicated st. YO and draw up a loop – there should be 2 loops on hook (Picture 1 & 2).
- Insert hook into second indicated st. YO and draw up a loop – there should be 3 loops on hook (Picture 3 & 4).
- YO and pull through all 3 loops. This creates 1 single crochet stitch (Picture 5 & 6).

Pattern:
- Do not turn at the end of each rnd.
- The beginning ch of each rnd does not count as a st.
- Colour changes happen at the end of every second rnd. To change colour, complete the final YO of the sl st join with the new colour. After a colour change, leave the unused colour attached to your potholder because you will need it for future rnds (see tutorial above).
With Colour A, ch 33.
Rnd 1:
- Hdc in second ch from hook.
- Hdc in each ch across until 1 chain remains.
- 2 hdc in last ch.
- Rotate your work 180 degrees clockwise, so you are working along the bottom of the chain.
- Sk last ch with 2 hdc. Hdc in next ch and in each ch across.
- Sl st into the first hdc of the rnd to join. Do not turn.
Stitch Count: 64 hdc
Rnd 2:
- Ch 1, 3 hdc in first st.
- [Ch 1, sk 3 sts, 3 hdc in next st] until 3 sts remain.
- Ch 1, sk last 3 sts.
- Sl st into the first hdc of the rnd to join, and change to Colour B.
Stitch Count: 48 hdc, 16 ch-1 sp
Rnd 3:
- With Colour B, ch 1.
- [Sk 3 hdc, (hdc, hdc-spike in second skipped hdc 2 rnds below, hdc) in ch-1 sp, ch 1] around.
- Sl st into the first hdc of the rnd to join.
Stitch Count: 48 hdc, 16 ch-1 sp
Rnd 4:
Rnd 4 starts in the last ch-1 you made before the sl st join in Rnd 3.
- Ch 1, [(hdc, hdc-spike in second skipped hdc 2 rnds below, hdc) in ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk 3 hdc] around.
- Sl st into the first hdc of the rnd to join, and change to Colour C.
Stitch Count: 48 hdc, 16 ch-1 sp
Rnds 5 – 24:
Repeat Rnds 3 – 4, while following the colour changes below.
- For Rnds 5 and on, the second skipped hdc from 2 rnds below will be a hdc-spike.
- Rnd 24 is a Rnd 4 repeat.
| Rnds 1 – 2: Colour A Rnds 3 – 4: Colour B Rnds 5 – 6: Colour C Rnds 7 – 8: Colour D Rnds 9 – 10: Colour A Rnds 11 – 12: Colour B | Rnds 13 – 14: Colour C Rnds 15 – 16: Colour D Rnds 17 – 18: Colour A Rnds 19 – 20: Colour B Rnds 21 – 22: Colour C Rnds 23 – 24: Colour D |
Rnd 25 gets rid of the ch-1 sp gaps left in Rnd 24.
Rnd 25:
- With Colour A, ch 1.
- [Sk first hdc, sc2tog across next 2 hdc, (hdc, hdc-spike in hdc-spike 2 rnds below, hdc) in ch-1 sp] around.
- Sl st into the first sc2tog of the rnd to join.
Stitch Count: 48 hdc, 16 sc
Do not fasten off of Colour A, as you will need this yarn for closing the top of the potholder. Weave in all ends (except for the current yarn strand).
Crocheting the Potholder Closed:
- Lay the potholder flat, making sure the front side of the potholder is facing you, and line up the front and back stitches.
- With Colour A, ch 1, insert hook into first st on the front, and the matching st on the back of the potholder, and make a sc.
- Sc in each st across, inserting the hook into the matching front and back st to join. Do not fasten off.
Stitch Count: 32 sc
Adding a Ch-Circle:
- After making the final sc, ch 13 (Picture 1).
- Insert hook into front loop and first vertical bar of last sc (going on a diagonal). Make a sl st to close the ch-circle. (Picture 2 & 3)
- Fasten off, leave a tail, and weave in the last end (Picture 4, 5, 6, 7).
