- I Love this Cotton Yarn, Weight 4 Medium Worsted Yarn (100% Cotton, 180 yd / 165 m, 3.5 oz / 100 g)
- Colour Combo #1:
- Colour A: Spunky (1 skein)
- Colour B: Burnt Sienna (1 skein)

- Colour A: Aqua (1 skein)
- Colour B: Rosey Li (1 skein)

- Colour B: 40 yds / 37 m
- Total: 170 yds / 156 m
Front, Back and Seam of the Potholder:
Colour Combination 1 and 2:
I recommend choosing two contrasting colours to really make your hearts pop! Here are the two colour combinations I chose: Aqua and Pink, and Red and Beige.
Abbreviations:
Gauge: Approximately 17 sts x 9 Colour A rows = 4” x 4”
- If your gauge is too small (more than 17 sts or 9 rows), try using a thicker weight 4 yarn or a larger crochet hook.
- If your gauge is too big (less than 17 sts or 9 rows), try using a thinner weight 4 yarn or a smaller crochet hook. You can also try adjusting your tension.
Pattern Measurements & Construction:
Customize the Size of your Heart Stitch Potholder:
- Width: The width of the potholder is determined by the starting chain. Chain a multiple of 6 + 1. Ex. Ch 6 x 6 = 36 + 1 = 37.
- Length: To make your potholder longer or shorter, repeat Rnds 2 – 5 until satisfied.

Cluster Stitch (CL):
- Step 1: YO and insert hook into indicated st.
- Step 2: YO and draw up a loop – there should be 3 loops on the hook.
- Step 3: YO and pull through the first 2 loops.
- Step 4: Repeat Steps 1 – 3, 2 more times in same st. There should be 4 loops on the hook.
- Step 5: YO and pull through all 4 loops.
Fasten on Tutorial:
- Step 1: Insert hook into indicated st (Picture 1).
- Step 2: Loop the new colour over your finger, and pick it up with the hook (Picture 2).
- Step 3: Pull it through the st (Picture 3).
Right Side (RS) vs. Wrong Side (WS):
In the pattern, the RS of the potholder is when the odd numbered rnds are facing you; and the WS of the potholder is when the even numbered rnds are facing you.
You can tell the difference between the RS and WS by looking at the hearts. On the RS, the hearts lie flat. On the WS, the hearts puff out and look 3-D.
Both sides are beautiful, so if you prefer the WS, then flip your potholder inside out before closing it.
Changing Colour Between Rnds 2 – 4:
Colour A remains attached to your potholder with a stitch marker at the end of Rnd 2, and goes back on the hook for Rnd 4. Colour B will be trimmed at the end of Rnd 3.
Rnd 2:
- At the end of Rnd 2, pull up on the loop on the hook and mark it with a stitch marker. Leave the yarn attached to your work because you’ll need it again for Rnd 4 (Picture 1).
Rnd 3:
- Before the sl st join at the end of Rnd 3, make sure that the Colour A strand marked by the stitch marker is on the inside of the potholder (Picture 2).
- After the sl st join of Rnd 3, fasten off of Colour B: YO and pull through the loop on the hook, leave a long enough tail to weave in, trim it, and pull it tight to close the knot (Picture 3).
Rnd 4:
- For Rnd 4, turn your work so that the WS is facing you (or flip it inside out if that is easier), and Colour A’s strand should be facing you (Picture 4).
- Remove the stitch marker, place Colour A back on your hook, and pull it tight to begin Rnd 4 (Picture 5 & 6).

Pattern:
- The beginning ch of each rnd does not count as a st.
- Mark the first and last st of each new rnd with a stitch marker, so you know where the new rnd starts and ends. After Rnd 1, the first st of each rnd is worked into the last st of the previous rnd.
- Odd numbered rnds are considered the RS, and even numbered rnds are considered the WS (see above).
- Turn your work at the end of each rnd, so that the back side of the stitches from the previous rnd are facing you. If you find it hard to turn, you can flip your potholder inside out at the end of each rnd.
- Turning your work keeps the seam straight, so that the heart rows line up.
With Colour A, ch 31.
Rnd 1 (RS):
- Hdc in second ch from hook – mark with a stitch marker.
- Hdc in each ch across until 1 chain remains.
- 2 hdc in last ch.
- Rotate your work 180 degrees clockwise, so you are working along the bottom of the chain.
- Sk last ch with 2 hdc. Hdc in next ch and in each ch across. Mark the last hdc with a stitch marker.
- Sl st into the first hdc of the rnd to join. Turn.
Stitch Count: 60 hdc
Rnd 2 (WS):
- Ch 1, hdc in first st – mark with a stitch marker.
- Hdc in each st around. Mark the last hdc with a stitch marker.
- Sl st into the first hdc of the rnd to join.
- Pull up on the loop on the hook and mark it with a stitch marker. Leave the yarn attached to your work because you’ll need it again for Rnd 4. Turn.
Stitch Count: 60 hdc
The stitch markers in Rnd 2 will not be used or moved until Rnd 4.
Rnd 3 (RS):
- Sk first 3 sts, fasten on with Colour B in next st, ch 2.
- (CL, ch 2, CL, ch 2) in same st. Pull on the tail of Colour B to tighten the join/ch-2.
- [Sk 5 sts, (CL, ch 2, CL, ch 2) in next st] until 2 sts remain.
- Sk last 2 sts. Make sure that the Colour A strand is on the inside of the potholder.
- Sl st in first CL of rnd to join.
- Fasten off of Colour B.
- Turn (or flip your potholder inside out if that’s easier).
Stitch Count: 20 CL, 20 ch-2 sps
Rnd 4 (WS):
- Remove the stitch marker and place Colour A back on your hook.
- Ch 2, (dc, ch 1) in first hdc 2 rnds below crocheting over top of the ch-2 sp. Mark first dc with a stitch marker.
- Sk next hdc, sk CL, (sc, ch 1) in ch-2 sp, sk CL.
- [(Crocheting 2 rnds below and over top of the ch-2 sp – sk 1 hdc, dc in next 3 hdc, ch 1, sk next hdc), sk CL, (sc, ch 1) in ch-2 sp between the CLs, sk CL] until 3 sts remain.
- Sk 1 hdc, dc in last 2 hdc. Mark the last dc with a stitch marker.
- Sl st in first dc of rnd to join. Turn (or flip your potholder inside out).
Stitch Count: 30 dc, 10 sc, 20 ch-1 sp
Rnd 5 (RS):
- Ch 1, hdc in first 2 dc – mark first hdc with a stitch marker, hdc in ch-1 sp, hdc in sc, hdc in ch-1 sp.
- [Hdc in next 3 dc, hdc in ch-1 sp, hdc in sc, hdc in ch-1 sp] until 1 st remains.
- Hdc in last st. Mark last hdc with a stitch marker.
- Sl st in first hdc of rnd to join. Turn (or flip your potholder inside out).
Stitch Count: 60 hdc
Rnds 6 – 21:
Repeat Rnds 2 – 5, 4 times.
At the end of Rnd 21, do not fasten off, as you will need this yarn for closing the top of the potholder. Weave in all ends (except for the current yarn strand).
Crocheting the Potholder Closed:
- Before closing the potholder, decide which side you prefer – the RS or WS. If you prefer the WS, flip your potholder inside out. If you prefer the RS, but want your hearts to look a bit fuller, then poke the hearts outward through the inside of the potholder.
- Lay the potholder flat, and line up the front and back stitches.
- Ch 1, insert hook into first hdc on the front, and the matching hdc on the back of the potholder, and make a hdc to join.
- Hdc in each st across, inserting the hook into the matching front and back st to join. Do not fasten off.
Stitch Count: 30 hdc
Adding a Ch-Circle:
- After making the final hdc, ch 13 (Picture 1).
- Insert hook into front loop and two front bars of last hdc (going on a diagonal). Make a sl st to close the ch-circle. (Picture 2 & 3)
- Fasten off, leave a tail, and weave in the last end (Picture 4, 5, 6, 7).
