Light Green Lacy Crochet Potholder Pattern in the Round

How to Crochet a Lacy Spider Stitch Potholder (PGCAL2024)

Hi guys! We are starting our fourth potholder in the 2024 Potholders Galore Crochet-Along: The Lacy Dainty Potholder. This potholder uses the spider stitch – a combination of the single crochet and chain stitch that creates a dense, overlapping stitch.

If you love texture, lace, and functional crochet pieces, then I think you’ll enjoy making this potholder!

You can find the free written pattern with step-by-step pictures below, along with a complete video tutorial for extra support.

If you prefer to print the pattern and avoid ads, you can find the printable PDF here.

Materials:

Yarn:

Option #1 – Solid Colour:

  • I Love this Cotton Yarn, Weight 4 Medium Worsted Yarn (100% Cotton, 180 yd / 165 m, 3.5 oz / 100 g) – 1 Skein of Serene Spa

Option #2: Variegated Yarn:

*Yarn Note:

You can use any worsted weight 100% cotton yarn as a substitute. 100% cotton or wool yarn is recommended for potholders because they don’t burn under extreme heat. Cotton blends or other fibers, like acrylic, should not be used.

Yardage:

Colour A: 150 yds / 137 m

Front, Back and Seam of the Potholder:

This potholder has an invisible seam along the side of the potholder, so the front and back side of the potholder can be used!

Abbreviations:

  • Ch – chain
  • St – stitch
  • Sp – space
  • Sk – skip
  • Sl st – slip stitch
  • Sc – single crochet
  • YO – yarn over
  • Rnd – round

Gauge: Approximately 6 sts x 12 rows = 4” x 4”

A stitch is a (sc, ch 2, sc).

  • If your gauge is too small (more than 6 sts or 12 rows), try using a thicker weight 4 yarn or a larger crochet hook.

  • However, if your gauge is too big (less than 6 sts or 12 rows), try using a thinner weight 4 yarn or a smaller crochet hook. You can also try adjusting your tension.

Pattern Measurements & Construction:

This spider stitch crochet potholder is crocheted in the round to make a little pouch, then seamed closed at the top. This method creates a “double-thick” potholder with an invisible side seam. It measures approximately 8″ wide x 8″ long.

If you’d like to crochet a smaller or larger version of this potholder, you can find instructions below under the “Customize the Size of your Potholder” heading.

Customize the Size of your Spider Stitch Crochet Potholder:

To make a custom sized potholder to suit you, follow the instructions below:

  • Width: The width of the potholder is determined by the starting chain. Chain an even number until satisfied with the width of the potholder.
  • Length: To make your potholder longer or shorter, repeat Rnd 2 until satisfied.

Spider Stitch – Easy Adjustments to Make a Tighter Stitch:

The spider stitch is a dense, overlapping stitch. However, if you’re worried about it being too hole-y, then here are some easy adjustments to create a tighter stitch:

  1. Instead of making a (sc, ch 2, sc), replace the ch-2 with a ch-1 to make a (sc, ch 1, sc). The ch-1 will create a smaller hole. Keep in mind that this change may make the ch-sp harder to find/work into.
  2. Go down a hook size until you are happy with the tightness and look of your stitches.

Video Tutorial:

Here is the video tutorial for the Lacy Dainty Spider Stitch Crochet Potholder. It walks you through Rnds 1 – 4, crocheting the potholder closed, and adding a ch-circle.

Pattern:

Notes:

  • Turn your work at the end of each rnd, so that the seam stays straight on the side of the potholder.
    • If you find it difficult to turn, that’s okay. You don’t have to turn. Just be aware that by not turning, you will have a noticeable diagonal seam on the back of your potholder (turning avoids this). If you choose not to turn, please mark the first sc of the round, so you know where to make a slip stitch into at the end of the rnd. You’ll start each rnd in the last ch-2 sp from the previous rnd.

  • The beginning ch 1 of each rnd does not count as a st.

  • Mark the first sc and last ch-2 of each rnd with a stitch marker, so you know where the new rnd starts and ends.

With Colour A, ch 26 (or ch an even number).

Rnd 1:

  • Sc in second ch from hook – mark with a stitch marker.
  • [Sk 1 ch, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch] across
  • Rotate your work 180 degrees clockwise, so you are working along the bottom of the chain.
  • [Sk 1 ch, (sc, ch 2, sc) in bottom of next ch] until last ch.
  • (Sc, ch 2) in last ch to complete the corner – mark ch-2 with a stitch marker.
  • Sl st in first marked st to join. Turn.

Stitch Count: 24 (sc, ch 2, sc)

Rnd 2:

  • Ch 1, sc in first marked ch-2 sp – mark sc with a stitch marker.
  • (Sc, ch 2, sc) in each ch-2 sp around.
  • (Sc, ch 2) in first ch-2 sp of the rnd to complete the corner – mark ch-2 with a stitch marker.
  • Sl st in first marked st to join. Turn.

Stitch Count: 24 (sc, ch 2, sc)

Round 2 of the Lacy Dainty Potholder

Rnds 3 – 23: Repeat Rnd 2.

Do not fasten off, as you will need this yarn for closing the top of the potholder. Weave in all ends (except for the current yarn strand).

Crocheting the Potholder Closed:

  • Lay the potholder flat, and line up the front and back sts.

  • With Colour A, sk the ch-2 sp on the left side of the potholder, and insert hook into the first sc on the front, and the matching sc on the back. Make a sc.

  • 2 sc in each ch-2 sp across until the last ch-2 sp – making sure to insert the hook into the matching front and back ch-2 sp to join.

  • Insert hook into the last sc on the front and back of the potholder, and make a sc. Leave the last ch-2 sp unworked – this is on the right side of the potholder

  • Do not fasten off.

Adding a Ch-Circle:

  • After making the final sc, ch 13 with Colour A, (Picture 1).
  • Insert hook into front loop and first (outer) leg of last sc (going on a diagonal). Make a sl st to close the ch-circle. (Picture 2 & 3)
  • Fasten off, leave a tail, and weave in the last end (Picture 4, 5, 6, 7).
